History of the Nigerian Library Association, Akwa Ibom State Chapter: A Look at Objectives, Leadership, and Programs

 

HISTORY OF THE NIGERIAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, AKWA IBOM STATE CHAPTER

The Nigerian Library Association, Akwa Ibom State chapter is as old as the state creation in 1987 from the then Cross River State. It adopted the same aims and objectives of the national Association, which are:

  1. To unite persons interested in libraries, librarianship and information services

  2. To safeguard and promote the professional interests of librarians

  3. To promote the establishment and development of libraries and to assist in the promotion of legislation as may be considered necessary for the establishment, regulation and management of libraries

  4. To promote and encourage bibliographical study, research and library cooperation

  5. To do all lawful things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objectives.

The state chapter of the association maintains the national’s directive of the constitution of executive thus: the State Chairman assisted by a Vice Chairman heads the executive. Other members of the executive include, a secretary, an assistant secretary, treasurer, financial secretary and a public relations officer.

From the State creation, the following Librarians headed the affairs of the Association

  • Mr. Friday Usoro Nssien (Late) (Pioneer Chairman) 1987-1992

  • Mr. Offiong Offiong Udoh (Late) 1992-2001

  • Prof. Felicia Edu-Uwem Etim 2001-2010

  • Dr. Emem Paul Udofia 2010-2015

  • Dr. Uduakobong Oscar Udoh 2015-2019

  • Dr. Eboro Enobong Umoren 2019-2022

  • Dr. Mercy Etukudo Ukpanah 2022- Till Date

Programmes of NLA, Akwa Ibom State Chapter

  • Monthly executive and general meetings

  • Biannual publication an academic journal “Ibom Journal of Library and Information science”

  • Organization of yearly library week, conference, workshop and seminar for librarians and teacher librarians

  • Participation in annual national and international conferences
